Lawrence Orbe wasn't driven to the Las Vegas strip for a game of blackjack or poker. He wasn't looking to win big. He didn't come for the strippers or outrageous forms of live entertainment.

Orbe, 64, checked into the exclusive Four Seasons Hotel on March 11 after commuting by car from his condominium in Montecito, Calif.
Each year desperate men and women make the pilgrimage to the gambling mecca to kill themselves. Once a month or more, a visitor commits suicide in this location, according to Clark County Coroner records dating to October 1998.

Rendell project could place slots in Poconos - 2004-02-09
Gov. Ed Rendell is attempting to revive stalled negotiations regarding slot machines, proposing his own version of a measure that could land the one-armed bandits in the Poconos.

Rendell's proposal offers for 12 total slot casinos in the state - one more than the plan passed by the House, and four more than the Senate's bill.

Four Caesar's resorts in the Poconos, which have expressed an interest in slots to be add to their traditional games like blackjack and poker, are located anywhere from 40 to 55 miles away from the Downs.
