Saratoga slots clue to Monticello's destiny - 2004-02-08
To discover how much, or little, slots will signify to Monticello Raceway and the rest of us, you have to encounter a 79-year-old slots-playing mother and her 52-year-old gambling daughter.

They're a sign that the racino in Saratoga – and the even bigger one set to launch in Monticello in July – represent more than just the beeping, flashing machines and cocktail waitresses in short skirts that make a racino appear much like a casino, with the exception of table games like blackjack.

Legislators don't see eye to eye on casinos - 2004-02-08
Extended gambling development supporters face an uphill fight attempting to win the endorsement of the Iowa Legislature, a Des Moines Register poll of state lawmakers indicates.

The issue of permitting racetrack casinos to have table games like blackjack was closer, with 42 percent against the concept and 38 percent in support of it. The remainder were uncertain.
