Panel Won't Budge Over Repeal Video Lottery - 2004-02-06
A project to repeal video gambling and substitute the lost profits with a sales tax hike was rejected Friday by a South Dakota Senate Committee. The State Affairs Committee killed the repeal measure 7-2 after those who contested stated that voters chose to keep the video lottery in 1992, 1994 and 2000.
The state and video lottery businesses share the money players lose in the machines, which feature poker, blackjack, keno and bingo games. Total player losses were $212.2 million in the budget year ending last June, so the state and businesses received $106.1 million individually.
