Governor seeks to re-examine gaming contracts with tribes - 2004-02-05
Gov. Tim Pawlenty's powerful signal Thursday that Minnesota's Indian tribes may lose their sole hold on casino-style gambling unless they are open to explore "a better deal for Minnesotans" could be the provoking shot in an intense war.
John McCarthy, executive director of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association, which represents the nine tribes with whom Pawlenty convened, stated that the tribal leaders have "no interest" in re-visiting the compacts, which offers state's Indians the rights to blackjack and slots in perpetuity.
