Legislators look for solutions to gambling tax problems - 2004-02-05
Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants couldn't move far from his office Wednesday without facing the biggest issue now looming over the Legislature.

For now, efforts are concentrated on arranging a deal. Rants stated that racetracks could be willing to give up taxes if legislators approve table games like roulette and black jack at land-based casinos. Those games currently exist only on riverboats and at casinos operated by Native American tribes.

While poker continues to rank less than blackjack in table game popularity and revenue, the tour and various televised affairs like the World Series of Poker are attracting new customers through the doors of Arizona's $1 billion casino business.
