Redistricting disregards 'big picture,' Rep. says - 2004-02-05
With his age and experience, Sen. Royal Johnson is not predisposed to start from scratch.
So, because the Districting and Apportionment Commission put a holdover senator in the district that was historically his, the Billings Republican will sacrifice a 10-month effort to introduce himself to voters who have never seen his name on a ballot in 14 years.

Johnson was able to persuade a freshman Democrat from the Flathead to vote in opposition of a Democratic bill to extend gambling across the state to house games, particularly "Black Jack or 21."

Legislators work on tactics after casino tax decision - 2004-02-05
Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants couldn't move far from his office Wednesday without being confronted with the most crucial issue now looming over the Legislature.

For now, efforts are focused on making a deal. Rants said racetracks may be willing to give up back taxes if legislators agree to permit table games like roulette and black jack at land-based casinos. Those games currently are permitted only on riverboats and at casinos organized by Native American tribes.
