House Panel Says Video Gambling Should Stay - 2004-02-12
A South Dakota House committee declined a plan to repeal video gambling. The State Affairs Committee voted 9-4 to eliminate the bill when foes noted that voters statewide have rejected to throw out the video lottery three times.

The state and video lottery industries allocate the money players lose in the machines, which feature poker, blackjack, keno and bingo games. Total player losses totaled $212.2 million in the budget year ending last June, so the state and businesses each got $106.1 million.

Sin City leading suicide capital in U.S. - 2004-02-12
Lawrence Orbe didn't come to Las Vegas looking to hit the jackpot. He didn't come for the strippers or outrageous live shows.
He came to kill himself.

Consultants say some may have been searching for one last clue not to pull the trigger or tie the noose: A jackpot, blackjack or smile.
"You're in a place that nobody cares. It's not famous for being warm and fuzzy. It's a place you can be anonymous and die," said David P. Phillips, who co-authored a 1997 study that found Las Vegas had the greatest rate of suicide in the nation for locals and visitors.
