Destiny of Castaways Uncertain - 2004-01-30
Gaming business observers are undecided over whether the Castaways -- a historic 447-room hotel-casino at the north end of Boulder Highway that closed Thursday -- will ever open in the future.
Stacy Rancher, a blackjack dealer at the Castaways, revealed that employees at the hotel indeed hoped it would be a busy weekend.

"They were supposed to be busy. They were talking about extra tables on the floor."

Psychologist Look Into Advantages of Pessimism - 2004-01-30
A Central Michigan University psychologist looks into the "brighter side" of pessimism in his recent research.

In the first poll, students were asked questions about their motivations to gamble and their opinions toward gambling after a win or defeat. The next study featured several hands of blackjack, such as a $10 reward that participants could either gamble or keep. In the final study, students played a simulated slot machine game to win a shot at a $50 prize.
