When Jack Kavanaugh was paralysed in a car crash last March, he believed that surfing the Internet was one of the many things he’d never do again.

After just one month, he had become an expert at several computer games such as Blackjack, Battleship, Connect 4 and a variety of card games.

He is even able to write letters through word processing with the help of a modified onscreen keyboard. He also anticipates doing his own online banking.

Tribal leaders, alarmed at a movement to stop their national monopoly on lucrative slot-machine gambling, states that they are determined to contest a proposed ballot measure that would add the slots to racetracks and non-Indian card clubs.

The initiative's supporters also feature operators of card clubs, where games like poker and blackjack are permitted, but not slot machines. They say they have seen revenue decline drastically since California voters athorized Las Vegas-style gambling for tribal casinos.
