Luck has barely smiled upon Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy), which is what deems him invaluable in Las Vegas. Bernie is what is known as a "cooler"; when he's around, good luck goes awry.

If someone's having a great run at blackjack, it will end cold as soon as Bernie comes into sight. Even slot machines jam when he strolls past.
